About Shanly Group
Shanly Group is a privately-owned property development and investment business with a strong heritage in delivering high-quality homes and acquiring and asset managing commercial properties to maximise returns. Our purpose extends beyond commercial success—we are committed to creating lasting value for communities, and in the future, our business will be owned by the Shanly Foundation, which supports charitable causes mainly across the Southeast. This transition underscores our long-term commitment to both excellence in property development and investment and giving back to our communities.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Non-Executive Director (NED) to join our Board and provide independent oversight, strategic guidance, and governance expertise. This individual will play a key role in shaping the future of Shanly Group, ensuring continued business success while aligning with our purpose-driven ethos. Given our unique structure—where we will be foundation-owned in the future—we are particularly interested in candidates with experience in charity-owned businesses, purpose-driven organisations, or long-term investment strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent, strategic advice to support the Board in sensible decision-making and good governance.
- Act as a critical friend, challenging and guiding the Executive Team on business strategy, risk management, and corporate governance.
- Offer insights on balancing commercial performance with social responsibility, particularly in the transition to charity ownership.
- Provide expertise in financial oversight and markets that will influence business growth or contraction.
Key Experience & Attributes
We are looking for a candidate who embodies our culture and values while bringing strong governance and strategic acumen to the Board. The ideal candidate will have:
- Board-level experience as a Non-Executive Director, Trustee, or in a senior advisory role.
- Understanding of charity-owned businesses, social enterprises, or purpose-driven organisations.
- Strong commercial acumen with proven ability to balance profitability and long-term sustainability.
- Expertise in corporate governance, risk management, and financial oversight.
- A collaborative yet challenging approach, ensuring high standards of performance and decision-making.
- A strong network of connections that will complement the role.
- Inquisitive nature with ability to challenge intelligently.
- Strong desire to add value to an already successful and purpose-driven organisation.
- Strategic, polite and factual.
- Challenge bad decisions, poor corporate governance and ethical or regulatory breaches.
- Look at complex situations and able to round out discussions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Alignment with Shanly Group Values: A commitment to our core values of responsibility & integrity, operational excellence, longevity, financial prudence, and decisiveness.
Time Commitment & Remuneration
This is a part-time role requiring attendance at Board meetings, strategic planning sessions, and occasional company events. The level of commitment will be discussed with the successful candidate. A competitive remuneration package will be offered, reflecting the candidate’s experience and contribution.
